Understanding Depression & Anxiety Disorders - 12th October - 30th November

We are often asked by coaches where the line is between stress and a mental health problem, or where the line is between therapy and coaching. The intention of this course is to give each attendee a detailed understanding of a range of common mental health issues, to leave you with a clearer view of where these boundaries lie.

This course is open to everybody, with no prior experience assumed or expected. Whatever your current knowledge, you are welcome here.


Six-week Online Course: 1 hour per week for six weeks

By the end of the workshop, delegates will:

Be able to….decide whether coaching is appropriate or whether someone really needs referring to therapy, by thoroughly understanding what factors are involved

Have learned about…. the difference between someone who is struggling but could benefit from coaching, and someone who is in the grip of a mental health problem and could do with therapy

Have practiced…identifying key signs which would indicate a more serious mental health issue and asking questions which will help to uncover this information

Understand…the clear signs that somebody would benefit more from therapy than coaching, as well as understanding the grey areas that exist and how to navigate them


Outline of content:

We will cover the issues below. We will discuss how each issue is currently defined in the UK, what the symptoms are and importantly, what this looks like in real life. We will then discuss what the recommended treatments are, where someone can go to find these treatments and what they will be likely to experience if they go ahead with treatment, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy (which is a key recommended treatment for each of the conditions we will discuss).

  • Depression
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Generalised anxiety
  • Health anxiety
  • Social anxiety
  • Panic disorder and agoraphobia
  • Specific phobias
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)


Delivery Method:

The course will be delivered in a webinar style, so you can sit back and take in the information and examples. There will be some opportunity for a few questions at the end of each session. Each session will be recorded, so if you miss one, you will be able to catch up.

Honorary Assistant Professor of Psychological Therapy at the University of Nottingham, CBT Therapist, PGDip in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, PG Cert in Business and Personal Coaching

Ted is a cognitive behavioural therapist who has spent the last decade working with common mental health issues and helping people to find the best treatment for them.

Ted also supervises and teaches therapists in order to develop their skills of diagnosis and treatment. Ted believes in putting things in simple, straightforward language and likes to use practical examples to bring theory to life.
